Bloating feeling lasted for about six weeks. My stomach still looks bloated though, it gained weight in that area or something is different about about it. My clothes still do not fit the same. I went from a size 11/12 to 14/15. Other than that I have not had any problems.
“Since I had my gallbladder removed in July last year and gallstones removed from the bile duct, I had to be admitted on a further two occasions because there was a tear int he bile duct and the bile was leaking into my stomach. When this was finally diagnosed, the bile was drained away over a period of a few days. Since the operation, I have put on a lot of weight even tho’ I am eating more healthily and exercising more.
I have tried cutting down on my food intake but have still not lost the weight. I am 68 Kgs (10 stone 9 lbs) and am 5ft 2 inches tall.
Can you suggest a reason for the weight gain and is it related to the oepration? ”

I am so glad to have read all of these posts. I had my gallbladder removed 7 years ago and within a year I started having problems. I have pain and a knot in my upper abdominal area. The pain radiates to my back and shoulder. I also have constipation problems and a feeling of fullness. When the surgeon removed my gallbladder, he said it did not have gallstones but it was inflamed. My Dr. diagnosed me with IBS but I just can’t believe that is the only explanation. Now I think I will discuss this with my Dr. on my next visit. I experience this pain almost every day. Atleast now I know I am not crazy or the only one out there. Thank you for posting your experiences.
I am so glad I found this site. My mom had her GB removed last year and soon after she was doubled over in pain. She was, thankfully, at my house when we had to call the ambulance. After seeing many doctors and finally getting in contact with a pancreatic specialist at UVA, she finally had an ECRP and found that she had severe bile back-up and her spincter (sp?) muscles were so tight that nothing was flowing through. Before we found the specialist all of her blood test showed increased pancreatic levels. All the doctors told her that she should not have an ECRP because her pancreas would go into a spasm. Thankfully, she had the proceedure. Since then she has had periods of extreme pain in her stomach, right in between her rib cage and to the side (i think right). She said it feels like the food is stuck in her stomach and is trying to get to her GB eventhough it’s not there. She is convinced that something is wrong with her and she’s going to die. She goes to the emergency room quite often and all the doctors say that there’s nothing wrong with her and that makes her feel like she’s crazy. I really think that she’d feel better if they told her she had Cancer. Then she wouldn’t feel like she was crazy and everyone around her wouldn’t think she was making it all up. Eventhough the doctors say there’s nothing wrong they still give her Vicadin for the pain. That’s probably not a great thing to take everyday.
HI I JUST HAD MY GALLBLADDER REMOVED 2 MONTHS AGO WAS FINE MAYBE A LITTLE PAIN RIGHT UNDER MY BREAST BUT THEN TODAY I HAD A PAIN THAT WAS SO BAD THE I THOUGHT I WAS GOING TO DIE PLEASE HELP IF ANYONE KNOWS OR HAS HAD THE SAME THING HAPPEN TO THEM
“I found this information really helpful i had my gall bladder removed 3 years ago and my tolerance to food has almost became unbearable. This wasnt immediate its got progressively worse and at the minute im so lethargic and keep losing weight. Naturally i know its food i cannot by any means go to a restaurant for a meal which was something we used to do as a family. I cannot eat outside my own home because i dont feel safe without the privacy of my own bathroom. Its ridiculous. I noticed recently certain meals i have are fine, cereals, pasta and wholegrain bread which i love anyway have been okay, i was actually suprised at pasta but it seems to energise me slightly so i guess i need to keep looking. I have decided to keep a diary on what i eat and the effects. Fast food is definately no more or anything fried for that matter. I must admit im angry that the after effects of this ‘dont seem to exist’ because we are not told of anything to be aware of, or even dietary advice i had absolutely no idea. My own experience was sudden i doubled over at home the pain scared the life out of me. After i was admitted i think 2 days later the whites of my eyes were yellow i felt extremely ill. I didnt use the bathroom for 4 days and when i did it was bright yellow. Of course i freaked out but the doctor just said i had passed a stone, and the blockage had basically caused jaundice and poisoned me. That was all i was told. My liver enzymes were around 1300 at this time and i was scared because they said it should have been only a few hundred. I also had the pain in my right shoulder after the operation he told me it was caused by smoking?? I found out myself it was due to a ‘gas’ if you like that was used during the operation and can leave small amounts that go away by themselves.
All this and what happens after? The doctors really need to tell us more about this iv only found out through feeling awful that i have to change my diet for the rest of my life, and find a way to be able to go out with my family again to a restaurant or even eat a sandwich without worrying if there is a bathroom.”
“No you are not crazy nor alone,, I too had mine out in Feb 2004 and Ill never be the same again. like you I had to have mine out or I would have died shortly .. very infected my injection refractory was 3% and it was really HUGE like 7 in long … plus we had no health insurance and here in Texas took 90 days to finds someone willing to help me.. I have classic post-cholecystectomy syndrome in all it’s incarnations.. Cant have much more than a liquid diet . although I will occasionaly eat but I am bloated in right side pain , will have shortness of breath, full belly after two bites etc ,,etc,, plus lots of abdominal adheasions ( scar tissue ) I have had many surgeries to fix duct work, take out scar tissue off the liver and other places ,,my right side of my back hurts constantly,, CANNOT sleep on my right side at all period ,very VERY tired all the time . I am 46 had 6 kids am usually about 135 at 5’7 ,, I am about that now but have a very hard time just living each day .
It affects us all differently but I do wish the Dr’s would acknowledge post-cholecystectomy syndrome and not dismiss us . Not that they can cure it because it comes in so many ways but that they could maybe help us manage it somewhat ..
I had the lap procedure which I am now understanding shouldnt have been done on someone as sick as I was that it can make post-cholecystectomy syndrome worse. ”
“I’m bumping this because this happened to me and I’m kinda scared. I had a really bad attack on vacation last week where I was in severe pain for about an hour and a half. The pain was in my upper abdomen, near where the bottom of your bra would hit. It felt like I was dying…then, it just stopped. It’s been about six months since I parted ways with my gallbladder.
I’m going to see my doctor tomorrow, but I’m really scared that it’s something ridiculous like cancer! I’m too young to be sick like this…does this type of pain sound familiar to you guys?”
I am in my early 20’s and had my gallbladder removed just after Christmas last year. They couldn’t find anything that was wrong except that tests showed my gallbladder working at 7%. I am still experiencing bouts of nausea and feeling excessively tired even with the medication I am on. (Yet, the med doesn’t always help). It feels like the pain is over my lower stomach area and my stomach gets bloated usually after I eat–even in small amounts more frequently. Is this something I am going to experience throughout the remainder of my life? How do others handle/coap with this health problems?
I, too, having my gallbladder removed almost 3 years ago STILL have this problem. Everything I eat goes right through me with the exception of maybe Skittles. Most of the time it’s an ooze of orange foam that looks like a frothy mix of citric acid and heroine. The gurgling doesn’t go away either… it only increases in strength and beastliness. I fear my dining out days are officially over alas… unless I can eat from the Chinese buffet in their restroom. And as far as my morning coffee goes… it’s become a morning laxative. I wish I had more comforting words to offer… like, “Hang in there! It gets better.” But it doesn’t. I’ll be praying for your anus.
“I do agree don’t worry about IBS. You may not end up with it. But I did. It is common, my mom, my sister, and I all had to have our Gallbladders out and all 3 of us ended up with it. The only suggestion that I have, is listen to your body. If the food that you used to eat, is now irritating you don’t eat it or limit what you eat. You have to change your diet to help control the IBS.

I am 50 and had my gallbladder out in Jan. From Feb until July i was doing great. In July the pain started again. I have been to 3 doctors and a Surgeon. The surgeon thought of a blockage. They sent me to a G.I doctor. My issues were bloting, stomach pain (went to the ER 3 times) Hardness in the mid section, nashua, cannot eat. I have lost 50 pounds. I am down 176lbs after surgery. The G.I doctor told me I need to learn to handle my stress. Then I will feel better. WOW
You won’t be able to eat anything for a week, the gas they inject in you if they do laproscopic surgery will make your lungs feel like they are collapsing and you’ll be chained to the toilet for no less than 6 months if not for life. But those are just the “good” parts. Consequently I have had my GB out for well over a year now and I have started having these horrible burning, searing, tearing pains where my GB used to be. The skin around that area, where the GB used to be, is terrible tender and the slightest touch hurts.Wish I had some damn insurance so I could go get checked out.
I am 3 years gallbladder free and last night I started feeling the dull ache in my upper abdomen going through my back. It is not as severe as it was when I had gallstones, though. I have been having heartburn and indigestion lately, too. Of course, being me, I immediately jump to I must have pancreatic cancer. Reading this is helping me tremendously!! I go see my doc at 3pm today and I am terrified they will find cancer. I am only 32. 🙁
