I had choledochoduodenostomy, or Roux-en-Y for short (not because I was heavy) This is almost the same surgery they do for gastric by pass. Mine was for upper quadrant pain. All tests indicating gall bladder. Had an ERCP only to have surgeon nick pancreas 4 times and I ended up with pancreatitus (11days in hospital) No surgery for gall bladder removal until 3-4 months later. (another 11 days because there was a stricture in common bile duct. A few months go by and I’m gaining weight. Start having same pain as before surgery. I’ve had every regulat test done and nothing. Three years later, I’m now 50 lbs more than when I started with this nonsense and I’m still having upper right quadrant pain. But…………it is all in my HEAD. GEE, THANKS DOC”S.
“SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME IM IN h#ll
I am in desperate need of help. I have had every known test known to mankind yet no one can figure out what is wrong with me. I was attracted to this site as I found the posts listed below of 2 people that had the exact same problem as myself but no one ever responded, and they drifted away.
This all started about a month ago. All arrows pointed to my gallblatter, but I have since had that removed and the pain still exists….
I have had:
5 blood work ups
2 Hedi Scans (before and after the gallblatter removal)
kidney mri
back mri
colonostrophy
stomache scope
rib xrays/chest/lungs
Pain injections
diabetes test
full STD work upI have lost 14 pounds.
Pain is under right rib cage, also sometime center of back to under shoulder blade. Hurts to breathe sometimes on right, lots of pressure.
I will send you a nice gift in the mail if you can figure out what is wrong with me or point me in the right direction that leads me to an answer. Please read the below posts:

I had my GB removed in April, it is now Aug. I have bad back pain that just doesnt want to go away. It started about to two weeks after surgery. Ive had Xrays, CT scan, 2 MRIs done and they cant find anything wrong. IM GOING CRAZY. dont know what to do. I was told that i would be out of work for 2 weeks. WE ARE GOING ON 5 MONTHS. Has anyone seen/heard of anything like this………———————————
am just past 3 weeks after gall bladder removal. What’s up with this “”mystery back pain””? i thought I was pretty much all fine and about 80% or better. But last few days my upper or maybe middle back on the right side is sore.
i saw 2 doctors today and they think it is just back muscle spasms. NOT A KIDNEY problem. I don’t seem to have any urination problems or anything. no fever, no sickness etc. Maybe it is simply my back, but doesn’t seem like anormal back pain.
meanwhile the surgey areas are a little sore and they were all cool the last week or so. Seems weird to me that the pain is sort of cycling back. I thought i was pretty much over it. I only used pain pills the first 3 days or so and felt improvement up until about 5 days or so ago.
Does it seem like the pain can fluctuate back in? I thought i was over pain.
the back seems the worst. it fgeels like about an inch or so just below my ribs on my right back area. Is this simalar to what you guys feel and the location?
it’s not horrible- not like teh gall bladder was SOOOOOO bad. But this is painful. God i hope it’s not my kidney. Docs…say nope. but man it hurts..”
“I just had my gall bladder out a week ago. I started having pain on my right side going to my back on Monday. I never had any pain at all with my gall bladder unless I ate wheat. Then I had pain on the left side (not usual I guess).
I had my gallbladder out for two reasons. First was due to diarrhea. Second was because my HIDA scan said my ejection fraction time was 18%. After 4 years of this diarrhea and unable to eat wheat, I decided to have it our. Diarrhea was getting worse. The surgery part was fine. I got dehydrated 3 days after sx and had to get IV fluid. This pain had started the day before this though.
This pain takes my breath away. It will wake me up at night. If I move a certain way (not sure which way it is) the pain is so intense I cant breath. Walking makes it worse. When I sit and dont move, Im good. But I do feel like I cant catch my breath sometimes. So I take a deep breath and the pain shoots. I have noticed that I burp more than I did before. I have no pain with touch to the area. Help
Ive had two blood clots in my lungs before and am pretty sure that this is not one.
I work at a Dr’s office and my provider isnt worried about the pain. The surgen that did the sx says it will go away. When? I had to take more time off work due to this pain. I usually dont sit still for this long, but this pain is keeping me still.”Hi I had my gallbladder out last november and I have lost well over 50+ pounds. But from what I have read I shopuld be gaining weight not that I want to but I am losing so quickly and I don’t know when it will stop. It is true I have a lot of medical issues but is anyone losing weight like this?
I am a 31 year old female who had my gallbladder removed in 2005. I have experienced a life of constant diarrehhia after eating meals, I mean within minutes of the last bite. This seemed to be my only problem until here recently. I am currently losing weight, having pain on my right side and pelvic region, frequent urination and lightheaded and tired all the time. Does anyone know if this could be a side effect to the gallbladder being removed? My doctor is treating this as if I am having phantom symptoms I guess. By the way, I also had to have my appendix removed due to it being burst at the same time as my gallbladder removal. I have lost 22 pounds in 3 weeks and I wasn’t overweight to begin with.

“dear friends–after 4 days of horrific pain in the upper left (yup) quadrant of my abdomen, my gallbladder was removed–they couldn’t do it via laparoscope because it was so inflamed so i have 5 incisions, 2 bandaid-size, 2 1 inch, & 1 that’s 4+ inches. the surgeon said both that it was 1 of the worst he’d seen, packed w/stones AND was extremely proud of how small the major incision was–said that his assisting surgeon was “”very strong”” which conjured up an unpleasant visual…i developed pneumonia & tachycardia, was in the hosp. 5 nights, am now almost a month past the surgery.
so in addition to having pain on the ‘wrong”” side, i’ve been a vegetarian for decades & am relatively slender. no explanation has been forthcoming about what caused the disease, altho’ my LDL & total cholesterol are rather higher than expected.
the pace of recovery has been maddeningly slow. i have zero energy/stamina & not much ability to concentrate. a one item shopping trip to target exhausts me–leaves me drenched in cold sweat & queasy. my appetite is terrible, with a constant bitter taste in my mouth–guess that’s where the “”bitter as gall”” image came from. mornings are esp. rough–some a.m.s i wake up w/diarrhea, which perversely doesn’t seem to be linked to fatty foods–i can tolerate ice cream fine, for example (& i go for the high fat good stuff…) i have a friend who thinks that adding supplements, in particular, digestive enzymes, would be a good plan. has anyone had experience w/doing so?
the other “”symptom””–or not–is an awful pain inside my right shoulder blade–which i had also experienced before the surgery, but it seems to have intensified significantly–which doesn’t make sense! i’ve seen references to gallbladder disease manifesting thru pain in that area–but mine’s gone.
i’m thinking of becoming a poster child for the platform that the gallbladder is NOT a vestigial organ–my body certainly seems to be functioning differently w/o it. any coping tips?
thanks–holly lu”I was one of the first to have the laser gallbladder surgery and i had a very good surgeon..I suffered with gallbladder disease for 5 years before they figured out what was wrong with me..I was 23 when I had it removed..Im now42..I have never had any problems..Its as though nothing is wrong..but i wa trying to find out if drinking alcohol in moderateration affects your liver more if you still had your gallbladder..
I had my gall bladder out in 11/09 I was ok for a few months but now I have severe stomach pain like I did before the surgery. I dont suffer from heartburn or GERD – I dont think- not sure what it does to ya. I just need for this pain to go away. I am on sulcarate and kapiedex – was on Nexium. i could not afford it so they put me on this kepiedex. Can anyone help me?
“I had mine taken out when I was 10 weeks pregnant in 1995.I too have this horriable problem.I sometimes do not make it through my meal before I RUN to the pot.I have just decided to eat once a day and AVOID restraunts all together. You did not mention PAIN.I have pain that is as painful as the gall bladder attacks were.Rarely, this happens to me without eating, but it does happen. My pain is so severe that if I am driving I have to pull into a parking lot wherever and it always doubles me over.I went to the ER once and they said “”oh,it’s just irritable bowel syndrome””
And a doc I use to have said the same thing.A year ago I heard on the radio that they were accepting people for a clinical study for free medicine for irritable bowel syndrome, and to call a 1-800 number.I did,the man asked me 15-20 questions and then said that I don’t even match irrtable bowel and then hung up.I am sorry I have no answer for you,but wanted you to know that this I GUESS is what we have to SUFFER with for the rest of our lives.IT SUCKS BADLY!Get medimucil, fiber cereals and/or fiber pills.Take them for a month and see if it helps.IF IT DON’T then you don’t have irritable bowel syndrome. And then ask your do and tell him you did the fiber thing. It did not work on me,Maybe you can get someone to care.I can’t
Good luck bathroom buddy!
Jennifer ”I noticed that nexium has helped with my stomache issues. I also noticed after I had my gullbladder removed that food goes through me quicker! I recently noticed that im irritated by dairy and I never was before! Don’t know if it is from the surgery? I’ve also heard of gullstones still being present even after the gullbladder is removed.
“I had my gallbladder removed 3 months after I had my son by c-section. It was 1 month after I had turned 20 years old. Its been 2 years and I have had NON-STOP issues with my entire body ever scince. Exactly 1 months after surgery It felt like I was having yet another attack of my gallbladder, I new it was impossible but it felt the exact same as the pain I had felt when I had my stones. Im 22 now, can’t drink liqour cant drink grapefruit juice, cant drink anything with sugar, among other things. So far I have been disgnosed with a gastric ulcer due to the amount of bile being secreted into my stomach, my liver is enlarged, i have chronic diarrhea ( i know this may sound vulgar but it gets so bad that my bum bleeds ) sometimes i have a bowel movement more then 20 times a day with only eating once, evening drinking water causes me to have diarrhea… My kidneys are constantly on fire, I have no energy, i HATE eating because i know ill be in the bathroom immediatly so while i go to school ( college ) for 6 hours i cant even have lunch or i will not be able to return to my studies i take anti diarrheals but when i take them my kidneys and liver feel like there on fire, worst pain ever! Among other things i also have a vitiman D deficency i take 50,000 units of vitamin D once a week and i feel no better regardless…
While reading all of these posts it makes me not feel so alone. Ive been so depressed latley i feel like there nothing the doctor can do to fix me and feeling as sick as i do every single day make me very unhappy …. im on anti depressants now and i feel like one giant ball of c**p. Im 22 and i feel like im a decaying 89 year old women. If anyone can help please please! repy to this post… i just wish a doctor could help me and get my body on the right track again…”
Hi, I had my gallbladder removed 3 years ago and i am still suffering pain on the right side, i have noticed it more after a after eating, if i am in a resturant it is worse because i cannot stretch out i need to lay down, do you also have to sit to the side, i know it sounds strange but upright is uncomfotable, i went to the doctors and was told it could be caused by the cartlidge on the ribs, maybe its what they do to us when they operate, also my bra wire is a pain when it rests on that area, all these things are so annoying, i have to loose weight also, so fingers crossed things may improve, please let me know if anyone has the same, thank you for reading this
I had my gallbladder removed five years ago and today I still have problems like I did before it was removed. Ive been to several doctors had more tests run than I can count and no answers. I also have to keep close to a bathroom when eating because the oh so familiar gurgling gassy pain starts then it’s a mad dash to the nearest toilet cause God forbid that I can’t make it to one and have to try to hold it which causes the worst pain ever!! My brother is always telling me he cant see how im not malnurished because my food doesnt stay in my body long enough to get any nutrients from it. Im glad that I found this site because it showed me that I’m not the only one having to deal with it!
