I’m 5 years ps after having gall bladder removed due to severe gall stones, and lately have started to get the old familiar pain and nausea again. I had no idea that you could get any symptoms years after having the surgery, but I too am starting to panic. My heartburn and acid indigestion are awful, whether i eat or not. And then lately ive woke up with the familiar pain in my back and chest ( like sumone is squeezing ) and that awful bloated feeling, then comes the sickness. Since having the op ive lived with constant bowel problems, ( my doc says IBS, im sure its related to this tho )which means i practically live on anti-diarrea medication. My weight has ballooned and im at the end of my tether. Im sure my doc thinks that since i have no gall-bladder i must be imagining these symptoms !!
I just had my gallbladder removed along with hiatal hernia repair surgery on April 20th and I feel awful!!! I have a constant pain in my left shoulder (especially whenever I’m eating and/or yawning). It’s the strangest thing ever. Just last night I became extremely nauseas and my body attempted to vomit but due to my hiatal hernia repair surgery, I’ll never be able to vomit again so I just bought up the mucus. This morning I feel terrible. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do for these problems. Thanks!
I don’t have the answer but I thought I’d share something with you. I had my gb out in April (I only had one stone but had the hida scan which showed an almost nonfunctioning gall bladder). Right from the start I felt a twinge occasionally where it used to be. I remember mentioning this to my surgeon who seemed surprised (he’s supposed to be excellent, highly thought of by doctors in this area). In early August I began to experience diarrhea despite taking Benefibre. I mentioned this to my primary care physician who said that gall bladder patients who had stones seem to recuperate better than those who don’t have stones (or very few) but have the low functioning gall bladders. I can’t remember the name of the condition she mentioned as I was stunned to hear this and not concentrating on what she was saying anymore. I went to my Gastroenterologist who prescribed Questran (to help with the diarrhea) but I got sick from it. Back to Benefibre and some probiotics, see how it goes and if I still have problems I’ll go back to the gastro (she mentioned that it could be a stone still inside & she may need to do some tests~shudder~). Anyhow, for those of us who did not have a gb filled with stones, it sounds like recuperation won’t be so easy. Maybe someone else reading this will recognize one of our symptoms.
I had my gall bladder removed in 2004 and since then have had quite a few problems. I have to goto the bathroom at least 8 times a day, and will only have one normal bowel movement (non-diherreal) a week, if I’m lucky. I’ve read posts all over the internet with people having this problem and cannot find a solution. I’ve tried changing my diet, stopped drinking caffeine, high fiber diet, just about anything I can find that I think might help. Has anyone found a solution to this problem or am I reduced to working to pay for Immodium?
Hello, I’m 34 and had by gall bladder removed in Feb 2009. Since having the surgery, I get diarrhea with everything I eat no matter what it is. My surgeon gave me Whelchol. I was prescribed 6 pills a day but do fine with 3 pills in the am only. It’s actually a cholesterol medication but works wonders for intestinal issues. No more diarrhea!!! So side effects. They only way to see if your body has adjusted is to skip the medication and see what happens. So far, I still need the medication and I’m wondering if I will always need it. I’m just thankful it is available and I have a normal life again.
I am so sorry for you and I know this post is late but I just found the site and so many of us suffer with this condition. Drs only treat it one way surgery or PPI’s. Recently I read that when you are not digesting all your food in your stomach some particles go to your colon and cause inflammation. The inflammation sends messages to your stomach to make more acid to help digest better and this can create a ph imbalance or GERD or both. You might want to try a digestive enzyme to relieve the work your body is trying to do, it helps especially, I would think those of you who do not have gallbladders to aid in the digestion. I cannot say it fixed me entirely but it cut down on the number of severe attacks I was having. The most important things are not to lay down after eating. Don’t even bend over or exercise, just sit upright calmly for about 2 hours. If that means watching a movie or sitting outside watching nature or writing letters whatever just let the food break down and keep the valve to your esophagus closed. Good Luck
I too have this pain on my right side and it feels like it is in my rib cage, and goes into my back, and shoulder!! It hurts so bad…prevents me from normal everyday chores, and tending to my children!! It all started after I had my gallbladder removed….So much for that huh?? Now I have worst pain then I had then..it is awful!!! Then on top of that..now I am having problems with bowel movement being normal..at first I thought it was from my pain medication for my back, neck, and arthritis…but I think it is more than that now!!! There has to be something they can do other than going in every so oftn and removing the scar tissue…..My doctor hasn’t said that it was scar tissue..he claims its a muscle…but I beg to differ!! Well I wish all of you luck, because let me tell ya…I feel your pain!!!
“Hi, I read your post and found it extremely helpful. I had my gallbladder removed about 5 years ago and i also still suffer from pain under my rib on the right side. I am so frustrated. i’ve gone to the dr several times and even the emergency room and they can’t ever tell me what the problem is. I am going to the dr again today because I can’t stand the pain any longer. I have also been extremely depressed. I thought once the gallbladder was removed, the pain would be gone too. now im wondering if it was even my gallbladder that was the problem…….
”I too had my GB out in July 2008. I have gained 20 pounds as well. It does not matter what I do I just keep gaining weight. I went to my doctor and he said the weight gain has nothing to do with my gall bladder. I also have pain in my lower right back. I hope someone can figure out what is going on with us. I least I know it is not in my head like my doctor has told me.
I had my gall bladder out three weeks ago, seen the surgeon 10 days following the op and he was happy that all went wel. Five days after seeing him i started sufferng sever pain in the upper back am not impressed at all! I feel a bit better after reading all the other posts my hubby keeps telling me to go back to the doctor he thought i might have had a chest infection, but now I see that this is probably related to my op. I know they removed my gall bladder but never said whether or not they removed the stone that was stuck in the bile duct. Have a follow up appointment with own GP on friday hopefully he can give me some answers. Night time is the worst for the back pain it keeps me awake off and on all night. It feels like averything has siezed up. Hope things are on the improve for you all.
Sound similar to my issue. Had GB surgery 8 months ago. Have the same pain in right side . Like yours mine isn’t sharp pain but a feeling like something is being twisted or pulled then I get awful bloating until it takes my breath away. All this occurs only when standing and/or walking. Pain sometime go into lower back when it’s the worst. The longer I’m on my feet the worse it gets. When I sit down or lay it subsides. Had Catscan, ultrasound and tons of blood work and doctors don’t have a clue. I keep telling them its scar tissue but they won’t do anything because they can’t see it on the test. Im at wits end.
“I am 47 years old. I hAD GALLBLADDER surgery 7 yrs. ago. I too
have the dumping thing. If i eat chinese food…I run to the
toilet before I finish eating. Or for that matter most anything
with fat in it. No matter how small amount of fat. It has gotten better over the years. Not as much urgency as it was at
first. At first I had absolutely no control!! I had a few acc-
idents to say the least. So I have and had to be careful of what I ate in public. I have learned to “”listen”” to my body too. As soon as I feel churning or pressure, I look for a toilet. Recently a GI dr. prescribed COLESTID. I am anxious
to try this. He is starting me on 1 gr. a day. Good luck all! ”I had my gallbladder out on February 17, 2000 and was okay for the first couple days or so. I went home with a catheter and ended up with a urinary tract infection. The catheter was in for five days. I took Cipro for the infection and this made me very sick. I stopped taking it and went back to the doctor. My urinary tract infection is gone but now I have started with diarreha after eating, and I mean stuff without fat. Yesterday I ate plain pasta with vegetables and today ate fat free cream of rice with skim milk and a banana, both times had diarreha. Crackers are okay, so is Jello and Sherbert. But if I eat anything heavy it goes right through me within 20 minutes of eating. I don’t think Im absorbing the nutrition and am very nervous about this. Ive lost a lot of weight and dont want to get sicker. What should I do? Is anyone else having the same problems.
“Hi had the biliary scan done and have been diagnosed with sphincter of oddi very common after gallbladder removal may have had it all along only had gallbladder out because it was disfunctioning.
Now using a angina spray when I have an attack which helps now waiting for a gastrophy and colonscopy and then will decide whether to have the stent put in to open up the muscle.”2010 I had my gallbladder removed because it was not functioning correctly. Since then I have had ongoing chronic pain on my right side thru to my back as well as nausea and vomiting. I have been put on cymbalta, lyrica, and noratriptaline, none of which have helped. I have seen specialist after specialist, had stents put in the common bile duct and pancreatic duct, which did not work. Since i have fibromyalgia the Dr.s blame this for my pain, but I didn’t have this constant pain before the surgery. I have fought to maintain a normal weight for the past 2 years and only the noratriptaline helped with that. The Dr.s are now sending me to a new specialist because they cant figure out what is wrong. Meantime i keep missing work because of the vomitting and the Drs are considering putting me on a med that has side effects of parkensons disease. My husband and I are fed up with all the tests and drugs. They have wiped us out both emotionally and financially. Looking back I wish I had never consented to the gallbladder surgery and just dealt with the occasional flare ups.
