I had my lap surgery to remove my gallbladder on Aug 16th it was very painful being rolled out of the surgery room and thru the night I was in alot of pain and kept the nurses busy I was in the hospital 48hour. I was able to take a 10hour flight from Houston-Amsterdam 6 days after surgery. I feel horribly bloated and can only eat very small portions of food in one seating. I feel lightheaded alot and feel like Im going to throw up. I would still have the surgery over again because the pain of a swollen gallbladder and stone blockling the bile was horrible !! I spent time in the ER in such pain it was the worst pain I ever had.. I hope this bloating will go away soon and I can ressume a regular diet

Your experience is similar to mine in that after the gallbladder surgery I experienced much of what you describe. The bloating and associated pain are most likely the gas you are pumped up with (excuse my rather crude explination, but I am not a physician), during surgery. After surgery this gas moves throughout your body until it disipates. This causes intense pain, and can be felt in your shoulders, back and stomach. As for the pain you are experiencing around the incision site, this I would have looked at. A normal healing incision may be slightly raised, and itchy and there will be some pain, but nothing like you are describing. As far as the bodily functions, that too may be something you have to get used to after having your gallbladder removed. Some people have lifelong constipation, or runny stools (kind of a c**p shoot as to which one you’ll get … no pun intended). If I could go back in time, I would have kept the old gallbladder and taken medication. I don’t think most people are given the down and dirty about having their gallbladders removed. Your body just doesn’t do well without all the pieces and parts.

“To: b-room queenI’ve had very similar diarrhea problems for over 8 yrs, but I’ve not had my gallbladder removed. So far I’ve just had 1 gallbladder attack, a few months ago, but I’ve had 8 yrs of constant diarrhea.

In my case, dieting and staying away from fats, spicy foods, meats, and even a bland diet of cream of wheat has not stopped my 3-8 daily bouts of diarrhea.

I’ve been to a number of Dr.s and been told it’s IBS and after an Endoscopy, last month, I was told it was just a little Colitis, but I have all the symptoms of a sludgy gallbladder, so I’m reasonably sure that’s what I have.

So I’ve give up for the most part believing in what the Dr.s have told me and I’m reading as many post as I can and trying to tie info together and find some answers that work for me…if we all do this, just maybe we can find some answers that work for us that the Dr.s have not been able to find. I’d suggest we do some research and look up on the Internet any other symptoms we have and see if anyone else with diarrhea also has those same symptoms and if they do, then post that information here. Hopefully that information will lead us to some answers or something that might lead to the actual cause of the diarrhea or at least help us slow down or stop the diarrhea. I feel at this point we all need to try to stop being victims of some problem that no one has found an answer for and be proactive and try and find our own answers.

I’ll start by asking if anyone has any other symptoms that don’t seem related. I’ve noticed that I often have a back ache in my mid to upper spine and that one of my vertebra hurts. So I looked this problem on the net and found that it’s usually about T4, where the nerve from the gallbladder inserts into the spine, here. So I’m looking that that aspect to see what the connection is.

I will tell anyone who wants to know that on another board I did find a med. that seems to control the liver bile so that the diarrhea slows down. From what I read on this other board, most of the people on it are living a relatively normal life. I’m currently working on trying get my Dr. to prescribe it. Sorry I don’t have the name in front of me, but it’s something like Welcol..maybe someone knows the exact name..but you can read about it on healingwell.com under the section on GERD or IBS ”

    “pjik,

I had my gallbladder out over 15 years ago and did fine for several years and here in the past 5-6 years i would have these real bad attacks that you thought you would die. the pain would be in the upper front part of the admonin right there between the rib cage and at times would go around the right side or straight thru me like a knife to by back. Well I know how your mother feels I also thought i was going crazy but they finally put a stint in and that took care of the constant hurting off and on it did not matter what i eat sometimes if i just drink water it hurt. So I have had 4 stints they can only stay in there for about 3 months. I had my last one out the later of march 2009 and i just had another attact this past weekend so now what do I do I can’t keep putting in stints and taking them out every 3 or 4 months. But that being said the stint might help your mother maybe hers will stay expanded and want have to have more that one. After the stint is put in you will hurt (ache) for abour 5-9 days so expect that. If they did a ERCP once and I had the same thing that was backed up and that was early on with me it is still happing with your mother get her to a speclist. My gastroenterologist refered me to a specalist that specialilizes in the bile duct acually he is a surgen.I am currently looking to see what my next step will be.hope she can find some relief.”

“I’ve been in pain on and off since I had my gallbladder removed 3 years ago. 3 weeks ago I got a bad pain in my upper right side and bile starting coming up…I knew what that meant. I was at work and I fought like heck not to throw up. I couldn’t sit up because of the pain. I wound up leaving work. This past Saturday (10/2/10) I woke up with intestinal pain. I had a couple of bowel movements and then the bile again. I threw up 5 times and then I was taken to the hospital. I’ve had an Ultrasound, Endoscopy, ERCP while in the hospital. All the tests came back negative. One week prior I had an MRI and that also came back negative. Yesterday (10/6/10) I saw the GI Specialist that performed my Endoscopy and that was a waste of my time. He did schedule a SBS with fall thru for tomorrow. I saw my Primary Doctor today and I vented my frustration. She thinks it’s a nerve problem (gallbladder area) and prescribed me a medicine for seizures!!! I’m sooo sick of this!!!! I want some answers!!! Thanks for letting me share.

Well, I just found this place by accident. I had my gall bladder removed about 7 years ago, I was supposed to have had keyhole surgery for gall stones but for some reason they had to slice me open and take out the whole gall bladder. I too have the problem of having to take a dump after eating, diarrhea most of the time, a pain just below the sternum and a generally uncomfortable stomach. Sometimes I only shit once a day, sometimes 4 times but it’s always the same. I have not lost weight, in fact I’ve gained over a stone over the 7 years. This could be my age though, I’m 58 and male. I have tried cutting down on fatty food but it made no difference. I had no idea why I had this poop problem but having read some of these posts, I now know what it must be. By the way, I was curious to see what my stones were like and bought them home, the largest one was the size of a marble and I had a couple of smaller ones but they were broken up.

Well, I had mine out almost 3 years ago. I rarely get nauseous, but I have been tired/fatigued ever sense. I’ve tried to get back into working out, but I never have any energy. I feel like I’ve gotten no sleep in months and feel like I weigh about 300 lbs (I’m 5’5″ and 162).

“Hi, I recently had gall bladder surgery(1/08/2008), and I am experiencing many of the symptoms that you describe. I had a major anxiety attack the day after surgery. I had never had such an attack before. I have difficult breathing as well. I am sorry to hear about your experience, and like you I believe God will see us through this.

I have been searching for a cause of the symptoms. Were you given antibiotics intraveneously? You may be surprised at the side effects of a commonly used antibiotic.

Also, were antibiotics prescribed for you to take home? Please let me know, and I will share with you what I have found out.

    Thanks, Char”

I am a 39 yr old female who had gallbladder removal surgery last March and since that time have been having increasing upper rib pain. At my 6 week check after surgery my gasto doc blew me off as having indigestion and had me take gas x…….the pain has only been getting worse. I went to my PCP in Nov and he said that I had iflamation in my rib joint and had a floater rib, take some steriods and antiflamatorties. I am still no better only worse! I went to the ER last week and they said that I had inflamation (inflammation) in my rib joint. If I move wrong or have a bowl movement it is almost too much. I am so tired of going doc to doc while my pain daily is getting worse and worse. I am taking extra strength tylenols to get through the day. any suggestions??? i am tired of the pain!!!

“Can anyone who thinks they have SOD tell me if you have constant pain even after drinking water ? I have pain for over 2 years upper right hand quandrant which also radiates to my back. Have had every test except an ERCP. Been told I have IBS-C. Nothing helps with the pain. I have had my gallbladder reoved in April 08 it did not help. All bloods have been normal. Liver and pancreas enzymes are normal. I have been to 3 GI doctors and USF. I do not have pain at night when I sleep. It begins after I drink anything or eat.

“dear friends–i’m new to this group & think i might have posted to the wrong thread, so am re-posting here–pls forgive duplication.

after 4 days of horrific pain in the upper left (yup) quadrant of my abdomen, my gallbladder was removed–they couldn’t do it via laparoscope because it was so inflamed so i have 5 incisions, 2 bandaid-size, 2 1 inch, & 1 that’s 4+ inches. the surgeon said both that it was 1 of the worst he’d seen, packed w/stones AND was extremely proud of how small the major incision was–said that his assisting surgeon was “”very strong”” which conjured up an unpleasant visual…i developed pneumonia & tachycardia, was in the hosp. 5 nights, am now almost a month past the surgery.

so in addition to having pain on the ‘wrong”” side, i’ve been a vegetarian for decades & am relatively slender. no explanation has been forthcoming about what caused the disease, altho’ my LDL & total cholesterol are rather higher than expected.

the pace of recovery has been maddeningly slow. i have zero energy/stamina & not much ability to concentrate. a one item shopping trip to target exhausts me–leaves me drenched in cold sweat & queasy. my appetite is terrible, with a constant bitter taste in my mouth–guess that’s where the “”bitter as gall”” image came from. mornings are esp. rough–some a.m.s i wake up w/diarrhea, which perversely doesn’t seem to be linked to fatty foods–i can tolerate ice cream fine, for example (& i go for the high fat good stuff…) i have a friend who thinks that adding supplements, in particular, digestive enzymes, would be a good plan. has anyone had experience w/doing so?

the other “”symptom””–or not–is an awful pain inside my right shoulder blade–which i had also experienced before the surgery, but it seems to have intensified significantly–which doesn’t make sense! i’ve seen references to gallbladder disease manifesting thru pain in that area–but mine’s gone.

i’m thinking of becoming a poster child for the platform that the gallbladder is NOT a vestigial organ–my body certainly seems to be functioning differently w/o it. any coping tips?
    thanks–holly lu”

I had my GB taken out about 3 years ago. Before leaving the hospital I told the nurse that three out of the 5 incisions were seeping and they discharged me anyway as it was a laperscopic outpatient procedure. Two days later I was vomitting bile and couldnt move the pain was so bad. Was rushed to ER where I was given admitted for 4 days with antibiotics and etc. Now, I have been to my PCPhad x-rays, ultra sound, CT and a visit to the ER. Have seen my Gastro doctor as I have pain under right rib that goes into the back and also down about two or three inches below the right rib. I have also been having major diarrhea and havee lost a lot of weight. Have been nauseous and have had stomach and intestinal spasms. I will wake up with major back pain in the right rib area. All tests are negative. She put me on some more meds for the spasms but doesnt help the pain or the diarrhea. I have been complaining for well over a year and now all of this has me on the sofa married to my heating pad. I am very active and have just been down for about 8 weeks. Have a recheck appointment with gastro doctor in two weeks and she said I might have to go to a general surgeon as it may be scar tissue. Would that cause major diarrhea too? So tired of this. Yes literally tired also. Try to keep a smile on my face aroud my family but end up yelling at everyone as it hurts but I don’t mean to. Hope they can fix this and it is so nice to know I am not alone. I don’t take pain meds as I have a 26 year old autistic son and need to be alert for him. Have to say. I have been scared. Happy to have found this site

I have had gallbladder surgery and the Nissan. And 20 plus years later I am suffering from choking, the sensation of food being stuck, and severe heartburn. I take 2 medications at night, yet still wake up and have to take Rolaids. How long can a person take these meds before nothing works. I have even used the cocktail lidiocain with maloox . I am lactose intolerent which causes multiple GI problems.. Any suggestions.
