I stopped taking my oral birth control pill and I’ve been attack free, bloat and indigestion free, and gas free. I’ve even been eating peanut butter, a known attack inducer for me! Coincidence?

  • Terri-Ann Mallon Ogle My hormones seem sky high at the minute without being on the pill i wondered if there was a link between it and gallstones . Going back on the pill to see if it will improve things

  • KM May have..i think there should be a warning on the contraceptive pill I was on it 20 years without a break .thus gallstones and had gallbladder removed over 2 years ago

  • MO I used mirena for 8 years, went back on the pill this past summer and about a month into the pill my stomach issues started. Now back with mirena and I’m doing great

  • JC Yes there is definitely a link there with oestrogen supplementation and GB issues. I only had GB problems after starting HRT for early meno, it actually states in the contraindications that GB Disease and stones are a “rare” side effect. I also find that the pain is worse at certain times of the month and after analysing it, it’s always at the time when I am on the oestrogen tablets.

  • MOr Mine was happening the week before my period at first but then it would come more often. The last month I was on the pill I was taking it at 1pm and from 3pm on Id have the worst indigestion. Felt like a belt was around my upper abs

  • Jay Henman It’s not a coincidence. As soon as I stopped taking the mini pill my gallbladder symptoms stopped. It says on the small print that hormonal pills cause gallbladder disease.

  • JH Oestrogen and progesterone can cause gallbladder symptoms. I read that progesterone ( the one that I was on) slows down the emptying of the gallbladder.

  • MOr It’s so unfair that us women have to deal with this crap. I know men get it too but we have more causes for getting it. Risk pregnancy or risk gallstone

  • JC I think that the sludge must be caused by slower bile flow, if it’s slower it’s going to leave debris, like dirty oil in a car engine. There are foods that we can apparently eat that thins the bile so it does the job more efficiently, beetroot, radish, celery being a few although I can’t and wouldn’t say they work because I haven’t been eating them for very long. Exercise to keep things moving etc. I have been told to cut out wheat as its a well known GB killer and in 1 week it’s really helped me, I was swelling up all over, legs, ankles, hands and stomach with pain but it’s gone down dramatically, but then I may have had a wheat allergy and just didn’t know it. The trouble is, we read and hear so much about what to do and what not to do that it all gets confusing and add into it, what works for one, doesn’t work for another, no wonder it all gets so depressing at times. I could research this for the next 10 years and still not be any the wiser in some respects…
